Dave Courtney, the infamous East End hardman and former gangster turned actor, has been found dead at the age of 64. The well-known figure, connected to notorious criminals such as the Krays and Lenny McLean, was discovered at his home in Plumstead, south-east London. Reports indicate that he took his own life.
Born in Bermondsey, Courtney’s early life was deeply embedded in the gritty London underworld. He earned a reputation as a ruthless debt collector and survived numerous violent encounters, including shootings and stabbings. One of his most shocking injuries was having his nose nearly bitten off, an injury he later revealed was “sewn back on.” Despite a lengthy criminal record, Courtney was acquitted in 19 separate trials. Known for his flamboyant personality, Courtney humorously referred to himself as “Dave Courtney OBE,” standing for “One Big Ego,” and famously had a knight painted on his south London home.
