French film icon Nathalie Baye, celebrated for her extensive career with more than 80 film roles, has died at the age of 77. Her family confirmed that the multi-César Award winning actress passed away peacefully at her home in Paris on Friday, closing a chapter on a distinguished career that established her as one of France’s finest actresses.

Baye’s career spanned many decades and genres, with notable performances not only in French cinema but also in international productions. Among her memorable roles was Madame de Montmirail in the 2022 film Downton Abbey: A New Era, a continuation of the popular British drama series about the Crawley family. She also appeared in Steven Spielberg’s 2002 crime thriller Catch Me If You Can, acting alongside Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.

Throughout her career, Nathalie Baye earned multiple César Awards, the French equivalent of the Oscars, which underscored her exceptional talent and lasting appeal. In recent years, she had been privately battling dementia, a struggle her family kept out of the public eye until the announcement of her passing.

Baye’s work bridged generations and brought French cinema to a global audience. Her role in the Downton Abbey film series introduced her to younger viewers following the success of the ITV show from 2010 to 2015, as well as the two blockbuster movies released in 2019 and 2022.

Funeral arrangements remain private, with the family asking for respect during this difficult time. Tributes from fellow actors and filmmakers across France are expected as the film industry honors one of its most beloved stars.
