American intelligence agencies are intensifying their scrutiny of alleged Russian and Chinese assistance to Iran amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has affirmed that Washington is not retreating and will take action against Moscow and Beijing “where necessary.”
At a recent briefing, Secretary Hegseth declined to reveal full details about the extent of Russia and China’s involvement, citing “operational security” concerns. However, he emphasized that the U.S. government is fully aware of what these powers are doing—or not doing—and is prepared to address the situation directly.
“We don’t have to air publicly what all of that is, but where necessary, we’re addressing it, we’re mitigating it or we’re confronting it head on,” Hegseth stated.
Intelligence reports suggest that Moscow has provided Iran with targeting coordinates for U.S. military assets. Additionally, Russia is sharing advanced drone warfare tactics that it developed during the conflict in Ukraine. These tactics could enable Iran to conduct deadly swarm attacks against American and allied air defence systems.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has openly acknowledged China’s military cooperation with Tehran. Beijing, however, denies any direct involvement and maintains a stance of diplomatic engagement. There are rumors that China may be supplying intelligence sharing, electronic warfare support, and possibly advanced missile guidance technology, though exact details remain undisclosed.
The complex relationship between the U.S., Russia, and China in this context raises the risk of a broader great power confrontation. Washington aims to avoid direct conflict with Russian or Chinese forces assisting Iran but is prepared to respond if provoked. This high-stakes situation could potentially involve NATO’s eastern members and affect security dynamics in the Pacific, escalating tensions well beyond the Middle East.
Domestically, Secretary Hegseth acknowledged increasing criticism amid the global crisis.
