A massive fire erupted this afternoon at Shepperton Recycling Centre, prompting a significant emergency response as seven fire engines, including two from the London Fire Brigade, rushed to the scene. Residents and drivers have been advised to avoid the area while firefighters tackle the blaze.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service received the emergency call at 11:14am following a fire on a conveyor belt at the Charlton Lane site. A spokesperson said, “We were called today at approximately 11:14am to a conveyor belt fire at Shepperton Community Recycling Centre in Charlton Lane, Shepperton. Seven fire engines are at the scene, including two from London Fire Brigade. We urge everyone to avoid the area while this incident is ongoing. Thank you.”
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. Firefighters have now extinguished the fire, although four pumps remain on site to damp down hotspots. The recycling centre is expected to reopen to residents by 2:15pm. Traffic on Charlton Lane remains slow in both directions due to the incident.
Shepperton Recycling Centre accepts a wide range of waste, including some items not accepted at other Surrey recycling sites. These include hardcore and rubble, upholstered seating, tyres, and asbestos.
