Traffic came to a grinding halt in both directions on the M2 Medway Viaduct today after police stepped in over concerns for a person’s welfare. The incident, which sparked miles of tailbacks, unfolded just before midday between Junction 2 (Sundridge Hill) and Junction 3 (Chatham).
At the height of the drama, motorists faced two-mile-long queues. National Highways confirmed the road closure, which began shortly before 12 pm, was sparked by police intervention over worries about an individual’s well-being near the coastbound carriageway at Strood.
By 12:29 pm, traffic was being released and the roadway was reopening. The M2 Medway Viaduct fully reopened by 12:30 pm, with traffic steadily easing.
“Kent Police was called at 11.54 am on Wednesday 1 April 2026 to concerns for the welfare of a person near the M2 coastbound carriageway near Strood. Officers are in attendance and the person is safely with them,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
Drivers should note that the M2 Medway Viaduct was closed in both directions near Junctions 2 and 3. The incident began just before noon and caused severe delays. Traffic was held for over half an hour but has now been released. Police on scene ensured the safety of the individual involved. Traffic is now easing and normal flow has resumed.
