The Government is allocating an extra £325 million to policing and security in response to the terror stabbing that took place in Golders Green, north London, where two Jewish men were attacked on Wednesday.
This funding will increase police patrols in Jewish areas and improve security at synagogues, schools, and community centres to safeguard local communities.
Specialist and plain-clothed officers will be deployed in key Jewish neighbourhoods to deter further attacks and provide reassurance to residents following the stabbing of 34-year-old Shilome Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Ben Baila. The Metropolitan Police have officially declared the incident a terror attack.
The Government intends to fast-track new legislation in the upcoming King’s Speech on May 13. These new powers, under the National Security Act, are designed to address individuals and groups acting as proxies for state-sponsored organisations, enhancing the ability to prosecute such offenders.
Concerns have increased regarding Iran’s use of criminal proxies within the UK, especially after arson attacks in northwest London earlier this month. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans highlighted the threat of “violence as a service,” noting that some offenders are motivated by financial gain rather than ideology.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has indicated she is considering banning Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under the forthcoming legislation but has not confirmed details until the laws are officially enacted. She pledged to review all groups that may be covered by the new powers.
A 45-year-old Somali-born British national was arrested following the stabbing incident on Wednesday, as police continue their investigation into the terror attack targeting the Jewish community.
