A 20-year-old woman was attacked and raped by a stranger in Portsmouth in the early hours of Sunday, 20 September 2020. The victim was approached by two men on Lake Road and followed onto Turner Road, where one of them brutally raped her around 12.30am.
Following a detailed investigation by Portsmouth’s Amberstone team, Abdelarahman Saleh Adam, from Gathorne Road, Wood 1, was charged with rape. Adam denied the charges but was found guilty by a Portsmouth Crown Court jury on Friday 4 June.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday 23 July.
Police originally arrested two 18-year-olds, four 17-year-olds, and one 16-year-old in connection with the case. All were released without charge and will face no further action.
Hampshire Police praised the victim’s bravery and urged anyone affected by sexual offences to come forward. A spokesperson said, “We would like to commend the victim on her bravery and courage, which has helped secure this verdict today.”
They added, “Stranger assaults of this nature are rare. We want the community to feel reassured we take all allegations seriously and are committed to bringing offenders to justice.”
