The A3 northbound is currently closed between the A31 and A322 near Guildford after a serious collision involving two cars and a pedestrian.
Surrey Police are leading the emergency response alongside other services at the scene. The incident has caused significant disruption for drivers in the area.
Highways England is deploying resources to manage traffic flow, but drivers should expect at least 30 minutes of additional delay on top of normal journey times. The closure is causing major delays for commuters heading northbound on the A3.
An official diversion route has been put in place to help motorists avoid the affected section. Drivers are advised to exit the A3 northbound at Cathedral Interchange, take the 4th exit onto Egerton Road passing under the A3, then at the next roundabout take the 4th exit onto The Chase. Continue via Madrid Road and Guildford Park Road into central Guildford, passing the railway station. At the A31 Farnham Road roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A31 towards the A322 roundabout. Keep left at the roundabout towards the A246/A322 roundabout and take the 1st exit onto the A322 (Woodbridge Road). Follow the A322 to the A25 T-junction, turn right onto the A25 (Ladymead), then left onto the A320 Stoke Road junction after passing under the A3. At the next roundabout, take the 1st exit to rejoin the A3 northbound.
The collision occurred around 6pm on Tuesday, 3 December near the A3 slip road by Guildford Cathedral. The pedestrian involved was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Surrey Police have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses. “We urgently need anyone who witnessed this incident or who has dashcam footage to contact us on 101, quoting reference PR/P19280703,” said Surrey Police.
Motorists are advised to stay clear of the area and expect prolonged delays as investigations and emergency services continue to work to clear the scene.
