A tragic accident involving a pony and trap and a car has resulted in the death of a Guildford man in Bursledon. The collision occurred just after 11.30pm on Sunday, March 26, on Portsmouth Road.
The victim has been identified as William Gaskin, 33, from Worplesdon, Guildford. He was riding in the pony and trap when it collided with a Volkswagen Bora. Mr. Gaskin sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital, where he sadly passed away shortly after arrival.
The driver of the Volkswagen Bora escaped the incident without any injuries.
Police officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit have launched an investigation into the crash. They are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the collision or either vehicle prior to the incident to come forward.
A 28-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail until July 26 pending further inquiries.
