Investigators from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) are working to establish the facts following a fatal police shooting in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill, on Monday 5 September. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Chris Kaba from Wembley.
IOPC officials met with Mr Kaba’s family to provide an update on the progress of the investigation and to explain the ongoing inquiry. They have committed to keeping the family informed as the case develops.
The IOPC disclosed that police officers in an armed response vehicle attempted to stop Mr Kaba’s car after an automatic number plate recognition camera linked the vehicle to a recent firearms incident. At around 10 p.m., as officers tried to contain the vehicle, a single shot was fired by a police officer.
Emergency responders administered CPR to Mr Kaba at the scene before rushing him to hospital, but he tragically died later that night.
Following a search of the scene, officers found no firearm linked to any individual other than police. Mr Kaba’s vehicle and the police cars involved have been taken for forensic examination.
Regional Director Sal Naseem highlighted the complexity of the investigation, stating, “We understand community concerns and know questions will remain about how this tragic shooting happened. We are working hard to uncover all the facts, but it will take time.”
The IOPC is calling on anyone with information to come forward. “We’ve visited nearby homes but believe there are still witnesses to speak with,” Naseem said.
