A tragic police chase ended in a fatal motorbike crash near Limehouse, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old man. The crash occurred on Commercial Road at approximately 2.20pm on Monday, March 20.
During the incident, two riders were thrown from the motorbike. The deceased, identified as Alamin Kazi, died at the scene. The second rider, aged 29, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Alamin Kazi leaves behind a wife and a two-week-old baby girl, adding a heartbreaking dimension to the tragedy.
It was revealed that Alamin Kazi had a criminal history. In 2016, when he was 23, he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison after being convicted as part of a gang involved in stealing up to ten motorcycles daily. The stolen bikes were reportedly used to snatch phones from pedestrians before being sold. Kazi admitted to multiple charges including robbery, handling stolen motorcycles and scooters, and attempted theft of a camera.
The police conduct during the chase is now under scrutiny. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an independent investigation into the police pursuit. Additionally, the case has been referred to the Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards due to the serious nature of the incident involving a police chase.
Following the crash, Commercial Road was cordoned off for most of Monday as forensic teams conducted a thorough investigation of the scene. Police sealed off a large area, and debris from the crash was scattered across the road.
