Daniel McBride, driving a black Mercedes, tragically died after crashing into two parked cars at the Coalbrook Road junction on Retford Road in Sheffield. The fatal collision occurred shortly after a brief police chase.
The incident took place around 11pm on Monday, April 10, when McBride drove past a police vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Attempting to evade the police, he led officers on a 13-second pursuit that ended in the deadly crash.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a full investigation into the incident. Their inquiry is focused on the actions of South Yorkshire Police and whether proper procedures were followed during the chase.
Emily Barry, IOPC Regional Director, emphasized the legal obligation for police forces to report any incidents resulting in death or serious injury to the watchdog. Investigators have gathered statements from the officers involved, as well as dashcam and local CCTV footage, to establish a clear understanding of the events leading up to the crash.
