PC Imran Mahmood of the Metropolitan Police has been cleared of assault charges after a 2020 Tasering incident in Haringey resulted in a man sustaining serious injuries. The verdict was announced at Southwark Crown Court, bringing an end to a high-profile trial.
On May 4, 2020, a man in his twenties fell from a wall on Burgoyne Road, N4, after PC Mahmood deployed his Taser. The fall caused significant and lasting injuries to the individual. Mahmood, who was part of the Met Taskforce, denied any wrongdoing when he pleaded not guilty in April 2022.
The incident was thoroughly investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). After a tense trial, PC Mahmood was found not guilty of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm against Jordan Walker-Brown.
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, responsible for policing in Enfield and Haringey, expressed sympathy for Walker-Brown and his family. She stated, “We recognise the significant impact this incident has had on their lives. We are committed to meeting with the family to address their concerns.”
DCS Haines acknowledged that the incident has raised concerns within the community regarding police tactics. In response, officers are collaborating closely with community leaders and partners to enhance trust and communication.
The use of Tasers remains under scrutiny. Police officials recognise the controversy surrounding Tasers and the importance of ongoing review. They maintain that Tasers are essential tools but emphasise their commitment to regular training and public involvement in monitoring proper use.
Since the incident, Mahmood has been on restricted duties. Internal misconduct proceedings will now determine his future with the Metropolitan Police Service.
This case underscores the complex balance law enforcement must maintain between ensuring public safety and respecting individual rights, highlighting the critical need for transparency and accountability within policing.
