The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has approved murder charges against a Metropolitan Police firearms officer in connection with the fatal shooting of Chris Kaba in September 2022.
The officer is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, September 21.
This development follows a referral from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which investigated the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Chris Kaba, aged 24, was shot dead on September 5, 2022, in Streatham Hill after police pursued his vehicle.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Helen Millichap commented on the case, stating: “We have fully supported the IOPC investigation as it has worked to establish the facts. Today’s announcement is a significant and serious development. We must now allow the court process to run its course so it would not be appropriate for me to say more at this stage. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this case.”
The officer charged remains suspended from duty. Any misconduct proceedings will be deferred until after the conclusion of the criminal trial.
On the night of the shooting, Chris Kaba was shot in the head by an officer firing from a marked police car on Kirkstall Gardens, a narrow residential street.
The shooting occurred after an unmarked police car followed Kaba’s vehicle without using lights or sirens through south London.
Police linked the Audi Kaba was driving to a firearms incident that had taken place the previous day.
This case has prompted significant public debate regarding police use of firearms and accountability.
