Lewis Wood, 42, a former Avon and Somerset police constable, has been charged with three counts of misconduct for allegedly sharing images of a deceased body on social media platforms.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the charges, describing the actions as a serious breach of public trust.
Wood is accused of deliberately distributing images and videos via WhatsApp between December 2018 and August 2020 while he was still on duty. The disturbing content was reportedly shared with his own family and friends.
At the time of the alleged misconduct, Wood was based in Somerset. He left the Avon and Somerset Police force in 2021.
Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall confirmed that a thorough investigation was launched as soon as the allegations came to light. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) was involved immediately, with the Counter Corruption Unit leading the local investigation.
The case file was subsequently handed over to the CPS, which led to the current charges against Wood.
“These charges stem from multiple incidents, including the sharing of images of a deceased male. We are committed to keeping those affected updated and supporting them through this difficult time,” said ACC Hall.
Lewis Wood is scheduled to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, October 24. Police have emphasised that they are taking this matter seriously and remain committed to maintaining public trust throughout this troubling case.
