At around 8pm last Thursday, emergency services were called to a home in Weston Green, Dagenham, following a 999 call from a man threatening to take his own life and stating that he had loaded firearms.
Armed police officers and a specialist negotiator were immediately deployed to the scene. Intense negotiations took place as officers attempted to resolve the situation peacefully.
Shortly before 9pm, the situation escalated and police fired shots. Despite CPR and urgent medical assistance from paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at 9.30pm.
Police recovered a non-police firearm from the address. The man is believed to have been around 40 years old, and his next of kin have been informed. No other individuals were found at the property during the incident.
Commander Kyle Gordon of North East Frontline Policing said, “My thoughts are with the man’s loved ones, the local community, and the officers involved. We will give full support to the family.”
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have launched an independent investigation into the fatal shooting.
An IOPC spokesman stated, “We have been notified by the Met that a man has been fatally shot during an incident in Dagenham shortly before 9pm. We have begun an investigation and sent officers to the scene to gather information. No further details are available at this time.”
