On Thursday, 23 November at 8pm, police were called to a Weston Green address in Dagenham following reports that a man threatened to take his own life. The man also claimed he was armed with loaded firearms.
Due to the serious nature of the threat, specialist firearms officers and a negotiation expert were immediately dispatched to the scene. Officers worked diligently to engage with the man in hopes of resolving the tense standoff peacefully.
Just before 9pm, police fired shots. Officers promptly administered first aid and CPR, but despite the emergency teams’ efforts, the man was pronounced dead at 9:30pm.
At the property, police discovered a non-police firearm. A search confirmed no other individuals were present during the incident.
Commander Kyle Gordon expressed his condolences to the man’s family, who is believed to be around 40 years old, and to the local community. He stated, “My thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who has died, with the local community in Dagenham and the officers involved in this incident. His next of kin has been informed and they will receive our full support.”
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have launched independent investigations into the incident.
An IOPC spokesman said, “We have been notified by the Metropolitan Police Service that a man has been fatally shot during an incident in Dagenham shortly before 9pm. We have begun an independent investigation and our investigators have been sent to the scene to gather evidence. No further information is available at this time.”
