The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating a fatal police shooting that took place in Dagenham, east London, last night. Just before 9pm, a Metropolitan Police officer fired two shots at a man who later died at the scene.
Despite immediate first aid administered by officers, the man was pronounced dead around 9.30pm. The IOPC was notified shortly after 10pm and quickly deployed investigators to examine the scene and question the officers involved in the incident.
Police discovered two firearms connected to the case—one located near the man and another found inside the property. Neither weapon appears to be police-issued. Both firearms are now undergoing ballistic testing to gather further details.
Amanda Rowe, director of the IOPC, said, “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and all affected by this tragic incident. Since a man died after being shot by police, it’s our duty to investigate all circumstances, including police actions and decisions.”
She added, “We know there will be many questions, but we must first establish the full facts before commenting further.”
The investigation is still in its early stages. The IOPC has reviewed police body-worn camera footage and call logs. Investigators remain on-site and are speaking to neighbours to identify possible witnesses as the probe into this heartbreaking incident continues.
