A man brandishing a crossbow and wearing a gas mask was shot dead by armed police in a chilling stand-off in Rotherhithe, South-East London. The victim, 30-year-old Bryce Hodgson, had broken into a house in the area before police intervened.
Hodgson had a disturbing history involving stalking. He was subject to a strict five-year restraining order that prohibited him from contacting or approaching the victim’s home until 2028. This order was issued after he entered a woman’s bedroom without consent and sent harassing messages, including explicit fantasies. Additionally, Hodgson was ordered to complete 120 hours of community service and undergo 12 months of supervision. A separate breach of bail charge against him was later dropped by prosecutors.
Initially, unarmed officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. However, when the confrontation escalated, armed police marksmen arrived and opened fire. Hodgson was killed at the scene despite efforts to save him. Two bystanders sustained minor injuries but are expected to recover.
The aftermath of the incident left a grim scene in the quiet cul-de-sac, with Hodgson’s gas mask, body armour, crossbow bolts, and military boots scattered around.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the shooting. Bodycam footage reportedly shows Hodgson threatening people before police opened fire. Neighbours described him as a “troubled and haunted individual” who appeared constantly stressed.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist praised the bravery of the officers involved, stating that their swift response “prevented further loss of life” and ensured the safety of others. A post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death.
Fatal police shootings remain extremely rare in the UK, with fewer than three incidents per year recorded since 2017.
