Jordan Masterson, 28, a former police officer, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison after having sex with a woman while on duty in Widnes, Cheshire. The incident occurred on December 28, 2021, when Masterson switched off his body camera while responding to a 999 call at the woman’s home.
During the trial at Chester Crown Court, Masterson claimed he felt “powerless” during the encounter. However, Judge Michael Leeming strongly criticised the ex-officer’s actions, describing them as a “gross breach of trust.”
“The public expects police officers to uphold the highest standards of integrity,” Judge Leeming said, condemning Masterson for exploiting the woman for his own sexual gratification.
In addition to his prison sentence, Masterson was issued an indefinite restraining order, prohibiting any contact with the victim, identified only as “female G.” His lawyer referenced childhood trauma and mental health struggles as mitigating factors, but the court maintained the sentence.
Catherine Bates, regional director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), condemned Masterson’s behaviour as utterly unacceptable for anyone in law enforcement. Having already resigned, Masterson has been placed on the barred list, effectively ending his policing career.
This case highlights the critical importance of professionalism within the police force and underscores the bravery of the victim who came forward to seek justice and accountability.
