A routine traffic stop in Tockwith, near Wetherby, has led to a police investigation involving North Yorkshire Police officers. On January 26, two officers are under scrutiny after a black man was allegedly struck and pepper-sprayed during his arrest.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a misconduct investigation following claims that the man, believed to be in his 40s, was struck while being restrained. North Yorkshire Police maintain that the use of force was necessary, stating the man became violent during the incident.
“The officers acted in response to the individual’s behaviour,” the police force said, defending their use of Pava spray and physical restraint during the arrest.
Although early reports have highlighted the man’s race, the IOPC has indicated there is currently no evidence to suggest racial motivation in the incident. Investigators have taken statements from both police officers and ambulance personnel who attended the scene.
The man was arrested in connection with the traffic stop but has since been released on bail while the investigation continues. The IOPC is focusing on whether the level of force used, including the pepper spray and alleged strikes, was justified.
Both North Yorkshire Police and the IOPC have assured the public that updates will be provided as the probe progresses.
