A female prison officer was rushed to hospital after being taken hostage and strangled into unconsciousness at HMP Littlehey in Cambridgeshire.
The terrifying assault took place at around 9:40am on Tuesday at the category C prison located near Huntingdon.
Police have confirmed that a 27-year-old inmate is now under investigation following the serious assault inside the facility.
HMP Littlehey houses up to 1,206 adult male sex offenders, making it one of the UK’s toughest prisons.
A Cambridgeshire Police spokeswoman stated that officers are currently probing the “serious assault of a prison officer” at the prison on Crow Spinney Lane.
Meanwhile, a Prison Service spokeswoman confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details.
She said, “The prison is supporting the officer involved and this incident has been referred to the police. We do not tolerate any violence against our hardworking staff and will always push for the strongest punishment.”
The shocking attack has raised urgent concerns about staff safety inside UK jails, prompting calls for tougher measures to protect prison workers on the frontline.
