Fire erupted on Goldsmith Avenue in Portsmouth this morning, prompting a swift response from multiple fire crews based in Southsea. The blaze tore through a large property, causing significant concern among residents and emergency services.
Police have sealed off the affected section of Goldsmith Avenue, which remains closed as firefighters continue their efforts to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation.
Paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service treated a woman in her 90s after passersby noticed smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the property and raised the alarm. Firefighters forced entry into the building and successfully rescued the unconscious woman.
The elderly woman was immediately taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, where she is being treated for smoke inhalation. Fire crews remain on site as they work to extinguish the fire and assist with the ongoing investigation into its origin.
