Two people were seriously injured in a head-on crash involving two Volkswagen Golfs in Sonning late on Tuesday night. A woman was trapped inside one of the vehicles and was freed by firefighters using specialized rescue equipment.
Firefighters from Wokingham and Caversham were called to the scene on the B478 near The Great House pub just before 11.30pm. The collision involved a silver Volkswagen Golf and a red Volkswagen Golf, which crashed head-on near Sonning Mill.
Emergency services responded quickly, with police, paramedics, two ambulances, a rapid response paramedic, and an ambulance officer from South Central Ambulance Service attending the incident.
The trapped woman was rescued by fire crews and both she and another seriously injured occupant were rushed to Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading for urgent medical treatment.
A spokesperson for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Crews from Caversham and Wokingham Road stations were called at 11.26pm. They assisted police and ambulance teams with a two-vehicle head-on collision and released one trapped female casualty.”
Thames Valley and Hampshire Roads Policing units are investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities have appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information.
A police spokesman said: “The incident is at an early stage, and anyone who saw the collision or has info should contact Thames Valley Police on 101.”
The road closure on the B478 was lifted shortly after 1.30am following the clearance of the scene.
