Police have sealed off Buckingham Street in Portsmouth following a tragic incident where a woman is believed to have jumped from a building this afternoon. The event occurred shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, 18th July 2017.

Authorities have closed surrounding roads to both pedestrians and vehicles. 1 Road, which connects Arundel Street and Paradise Street, is also shut. Police community support officers are stationed to monitor the area. Vehicles in the nearby NCP car park are allowed to exit but no entry is permitted into the cordoned zone.

The victim reportedly fell from a ninth-floor window at Chandos Rise, Buckingham Street. Emergency services, including Hampshire Police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue, responded promptly to the scene. Fire crews utilized an aerial ladder platform to assist in recovering the body, which was confirmed deceased at the location.

A nearby contractor made a brave attempt to rescue the woman by using a ladder to reach the flat roof where she landed, providing assistance to paramedics. Unfortunately, the rescue efforts were unsuccessful.

“We received reports of a person falling from height on Buckingham Street,” said a South Central Ambulance Service spokesperson. “A paramedic and rapid response vehicle were dispatched immediately.”

Hampshire Police confirmed they were called to Buckingham Road just before 2.20pm. A statement revealed that a woman’s body was found on a rooftop. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
