A deadly mid-air collision has occurred near Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, involving a plane and a helicopter, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed. The crash took place at 12:06pm, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Ambulance services reported multiple casualties at the scene. The South Central Ambulance Service stated: “We received the call at 12:09pm about a mid-air collision involving a helicopter and an aircraft near Upper Winchendon, close to Aylesbury. We dispatched a Thames Valley air ambulance, two ambulance crews, two ambulance officers, and a rapid response vehicle. Several casualties are being treated.”
A spokesman from Wycombe Air Park confirmed that both the plane and helicopter involved had taken off from their airfield near High Wycombe, approximately 20 miles from the crash location. Wycombe Air Park is well known for flight training activities.
Emergency services responded with significant resources. Seven fire engines from Aylesbury, Haddenham, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire were deployed to tackle the resulting blaze. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue sent urban search and rescue teams, with 30 crew members working at the site.
Police have issued warnings about disruptions in the area and emphasized that saving lives remains the top priority. The crash occurred in a wooded area close to Waddesdon Manor. The National Trust confirmed that the manor grounds were not affected by the incident, although staff assisted emergency teams in accessing the crash site.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is currently investigating the accident to determine the cause of the collision.
