A woman in her 20s or early 30s was left in critical condition after jumping from a major motorway bridge in Southampton this evening.

Emergency services were swift to arrive at the scene. Specialist negotiators attempted to talk the woman down, but despite their efforts, she jumped onto the carriageway below.

Police and Highways England promptly declared a major incident and closed the affected section of the M27 motorway.

Life-saving efforts were carried out by the South Central Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Both air and ground teams rushed to treat the woman, who sustained serious, life-changing injuries.

She was airlifted to Southampton General Major Trauma Centre for urgent medical care.

A Highways England spokesman confirmed that all lanes of the M27 have now reopened and that trapped traffic is moving again following the emergency closure.
