A driver miraculously dodged serious injury after his car careered off the M27 this morning. The incident occurred just before 7.30am near Junction 5 Eastleigh Airport, as stormy weather battered the south’s roads.
The two-door sky blue Mercedes lost control, skidding across three lanes of the busy eastbound motorway. It finally came to rest in a grassy gully, wedged in a hedgerow.
Hampshire Road Policing teamed up with Highways England to close one lane for safety. Hampshire Fire & Rescue dispatched two appliances and a Rescue Support Unit from Cosham, though the unit was not needed. South Central Ambulance sent a land ambulance; paramedics checked the driver on-site.
Ravenscroft recovery crew winched the Mercedes back onto the hard shoulder.
Traffic slowed in both directions as motorists slowed down to look at the dramatic wreckage. Thankfully, the driver walked away with no serious injuries – a lucky escape amid the hazardous weather conditions.
