A 78-year-old pensioner from Hayling Island sparked a major rescue operation after attempting a shortcut across a creek. The local man, known as David and a resident for over 40 years, believed he could get home quicker by driving his blue automatic Nissan off the slipway into the water this afternoon.
Four fire appliances from Hayling Island, Cosham, and a specialist water rescue unit from Fareham quickly responded to the scene on Eastoke Avenue after David’s car became stuck in the mud. The vehicle was immobilised, forcing David to exit the car, only to become trapped himself in the thick mud.
Local residents rushed to assist the pensioner before emergency services arrived. Medics from South Central Ambulance treated David at the scene while fire crews used specialist winching equipment to free the Nissan from the creek.
After the rescue, and a well-earned cup of tea, David was able to continue his journey. However, local residents suggest it may be time for him to consider giving up driving altogether.
