Disaster struck the M40 motorway this morning when a lorry carrying rock salt overturned between Junction 9 and Junction 8A just after 10:30am. The motorway remains completely blocked, causing major traffic chaos and delays.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident. Fire crews from Bicester, Kidlington, and Woodstock arrived at the scene and coordinated efforts with Thames Valley Police, South Central Ambulance Service, and the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) to secure the area and manage the situation.
Fortunately, the lorry driver escaped serious injury despite the dramatic crash. However, the closure of the motorway is resulting in significant tailbacks as Highways England works to clear the overturned vehicle and spilled rock salt.
The M40 is currently shut between Junctions 9 and 8A, with major tailbacks reported. Drivers are strongly urged to find alternative routes and avoid the area while recovery teams carry out clearance operations.
Commuters should expect delays and plan accordingly until the motorway is fully reopened.
