A double-decker bus crashed spectacularly in Oakley after the driver suffered a seizure and lost control. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Andover Road, which remains shut both ways.
The crash happened just before noon on the busy B3400, Andover Road. Hampshire Roads Policing, South Central Ambulance Service, and Hampshire Fire & Rescue responded with a major emergency operation. Fire crews from Overton, Whitchurch, and Basingstoke, including four fire engines and rescue support vehicles, tackled the incident.
A road closure is in place between Deane Park and Oakley Village, causing significant disruption. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and follow alternative routes.
Police confirmed that 19 people were on the bus at the time of the crash. Five passengers suffered serious injuries, six sustained minor injuries, and eight escaped without harm. Two critically injured patients were transported to the major trauma unit at University Hospital Southampton, while others were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
“We received multiple 999 calls just before 12.00 today reporting an accident involving a double-decker bus on the B3400,” said South Central Ambulance Service.
Authorities are working with partner agencies to clear the scene as quickly as possible but warn that the closure will remain in place until this evening.
The driver had a seizure, which caused the crash, though their current condition is not yet known. Fire crews are conducting scene safety checks and assessing whether anyone is trapped inside the vehicle.
Ambulance and rescue teams have been on high alert, with 10 ambulances and specialist response units attending the incident. Police have asked the public to avoid Andover Road and follow posted diversions.
