Fifty-seven people fell ill following a suspected chemical leak at Rumwood Green Farm industrial estate in Maidstone, Kent. The incident caused a lockdown of the farm and a major emergency response on Wednesday.
The alarm was raised shortly after 2:30pm when carbon monoxide was detected at the industrial site near Sutton Road, Langley. Kent Fire and Rescue Service deployed seven fire crews along with hazardous materials experts to manage the situation.
A spokesman confirmed that numerous individuals experienced breathing difficulties, leading paramedics to treat 57 victims at the scene. An air ambulance also landed nearby to assist with medical support.
By 5pm, firefighters were still working to identify the exact chemical involved. Police, fire crews, and ambulance teams established a perimeter to keep local residents and businesses away from the contaminated area.
Kent Police was alerted by South East Coast Ambulance Service at 2:49pm following reports of the suspected leak. A police representative stated, “Officers remain on scene offering assistance where needed.”
Four patients were taken to hospital—one to Pembury Hospital and three to Maidstone Hospital. The majority of those affected were moved to a rest centre for treatment and welfare support.
Chris Stamp, Strategic Commander for SECAmb, praised the emergency response, saying, “This was a prolonged incident involving many patients. I extend my sympathy to those affected and commend all crews for their hard work. We are working closely with partners to care for everyone impacted.”
By Wednesday evening, the Major Incident declaration was stood down, although emergency teams remain vigilant. The site remains under lockdown as investigations continue into the cause of the chemical leak. Updates will follow as the situation develops.
