Canterbury police have stepped up efforts to ensure the safety of new university students during Freshers’ Week. Starting Monday 19 September 2022, officers from the Canterbury Community Safety Unit set up stalls at the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, and the University for the Creative Arts.
At these stalls, students received personal safety alarms and drink protectors designed to prevent tampering. Officers also distributed detailed maps highlighting the safest routes around Canterbury, helping freshers navigate the city with confidence.
On Thursday 22 September, a city centre safety hub was established where police and PCSOs collaborated with the city council, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The hub engaged with students enjoying their first night out, sharing important safety information to help prevent incidents and promote a secure nightlife experience.
Sergeant John Woodward of the Canterbury Community Safety Unit commented on the initiative: “Canterbury welcomes around 40,000 students every year, and we’re determined to keep them safe and crime-free. For many, this is their first time away from home. That’s why Kent Police works closely with local universities to provide the support they need.”
Sergeant Woodward also announced plans to expand the Best Bar None scheme across Canterbury’s nightlife venues. This scheme aims to combat drink spiking and violence against women by enforcing stricter safety measures in all licensed premises.
He added, “We wish all students a safe and successful year. If anyone has concerns, the Community Safety Unit is here to help.”
