A major exit at Bluewater Shopping Complex near Dartford, Kent, was closed in the early hours of Sunday following a high-speed crash involving a Silver Vauxhall Vectra.
The vehicle careered out of control and slammed into the central barrier on Bluewater Parkway just before midnight on Saturday, 28 December.
Witnesses reported that the Vauxhall was speeding around the bend before crashing hard into the road furniture, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
The mangled car became entangled in the safety barrier and required a specialist Hi-ab crane for recovery.
One onlooker described seeing around 20 emergency vehicles lining the elevated road shortly after the incident.
The Kent Air Ambulance and the South East Coast Hazardous Area Response Team (SEC HART) were called to assist at the scene.
Police confirmed the driver was rushed to a local hospital with serious but stable injuries. At this stage, the exact extent of the injuries remains unclear.
Rumours of a fatality circulated on social media; however, police have not confirmed any deaths.
Kent Police stated: “Police were called to Bluewater at 11.14pm on Saturday, 28 December following a report of a road traffic collision involving one vehicle. South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.”
“The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries are serious but not life threatening or changing.”
