A 35-year-old woman tragically died after fleeing a burning car and falling approximately 50 feet from a nearby bridge on the A21 in Tonbridge, Kent. The incident occurred just after 2:10 am, leaving the woman with severe spinal and internal injuries.
Despite urgent efforts by paramedics and air ambulance crews from Kent, Sussex, and Surrey, she was pronounced dead at the roadside nearly two hours later.
A 31-year-old man, believed to be from London, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident. He was taken to Tunbridge Wells Police Station for questioning.
Kent Police stated: “We were called at 2:34 am to the A21 near the exit for Tonbridge, where a woman with serious injuries was pronounced deceased by South East Coast Ambulance Service. Kent Fire and Rescue also attended to extinguish a car fire at the location. Detectives are probing a potential link between the car fire and the woman’s tragic fall.”
The A21 was closed between Morley’s Roundabout and Tonbridge Bypass, causing significant traffic congestion during rush hour. Motorists experienced delays of over three hours as emergency services conducted rescue and investigation operations.
Authorities advised drivers heading to Tunbridge Wells Hospital to expect serious delays due to the road closure.
A Kent Police spokesperson appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage, saying: “Detectives would like to hear from anyone with information, especially motorists travelling in the area who may have dashcam footage.”
The full circumstances surrounding the fatal incident remain under investigation as emergency services continue to work to establish what happened on the A21 that night.
