Kent Police are investigating a major disturbance at Greatstone Beach following a large gathering that breached Covid-19 regulations. The force is urging the public to maintain social distancing and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further spread of the virus.
Officers were called to the scene around midday on Sunday, 9 August 2020, after reports of a pre-planned large group assembling at Greatstone Beach. Police were only informed of the exact location as the crowd arrived, prompting a swift response from patrols.
Throughout the day, police engaged with the group, reminding attendees of government guidelines and addressing reports of anti-social behaviour. Visitors were encouraged to consider their impact on the wider community and take personal responsibility to help control Covid-19.
Trouble escalated around 9pm with an altercation in a nearby car park. During the incident, four police officers were injured and required treatment at the scene by the South East Coast Ambulance Service. A 29-year-old man from London was arrested in connection with the disturbance.
Superintendent Simon Thompson, Deputy Area Commander for East Kent, said: “Our officers stayed on-site all day to ensure compliance. While most people follow the rules, we won’t tolerate those who flout safety measures or cause anti-social behaviour.”
He added, “Beaches and parks have been busier since lockdown eased, but spreading Covid-19 remains a real threat. Everyone must respect distancing rules and think of the local community. Anyone planning large events should consider the consequences for residents and public safety.”
“We continue to investigate the altercation and urge witnesses to come forward,” Superintendent Thompson concluded.
