The M2 motorway was closed between junction 3 (Maidstone/A229) and junction 4 (Gillingham/A278) following a serious crash involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). The incident occurred when the HGV narrowly avoided a dangerous crossover, resulting in significant damage and injuries.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly after 3.10pm, responding to reports of the collision. The driver of the HGV sustained serious injuries and was treated on site before being transported to William Harvey Hospital. The South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed their attendance and involvement of an air ambulance crew, although the driver was ultimately taken to hospital by road.
A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said, “I can confirm we attended a serious road traffic collision involving an HGV. The man received immediate care and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.”
The crash caused extensive damage to a large section of crash barriers, prompting a major recovery and repair operation. As a result, both carriageways of the M2 remained closed overnight, with the closure only lifted after 3am on Wednesday morning. This caused significant disruption for commuters travelling between Maidstone and Gillingham.
