Emergency crews rushed to the A27 eastbound between Falmer and Ashcombe roundabout following a serious multi-vehicle crash late on Friday night.
Firefighters from East Sussex Fire and Rescue arrived with specialist cutting equipment to free two people trapped inside an overturned vehicle. Both victims are reported to be in critical condition after the crash, which was first reported at around 10:40 pm.
The Kent, Sussex, and Surrey air ambulances were scrambled alongside paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service. Additionally, a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) is supporting the emergency response at the scene.
Sussex Police have closed the A27 in both directions while they investigate the cause of the collision. The closure is expected to last for some time, causing major disruption for commuters and travellers.
