A woman was plucked from near-freezing sea waters off Brighton’s Palace Pier in the early hours of 4 January. The rescue took place in chilling 8°C water, prompting a rapid response from emergency teams.
Brighton lifeboat and local coastguard teams received an urgent call at 1:45 AM after a distress report. Brighton Beach Patrol raised the alarm following concerns about a female near the water’s edge. Mobile security patrols joined Sussex Police and coastguards in a coordinated rescue effort.
The woman was safely hauled from the water and handed over to South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb). Her condition and how she ended up in the water have not been disclosed.
HM Coastguard provided a statement: “HM Coastguard assisted Sussex Police with an incident at Brighton Seafront. Alerted shortly before 1.45am on Saturday 4 January, Newhaven and Shoreham Coastguard Rescue Teams were tasked alongside Brighton RNLI lifeboat. The person was handed to the care of South East Coast Ambulance Service.”
Brighton Beach Patrol has recently expanded its operations to increase safety during nighttime hours. The patrols now run on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 PM to 4 AM. Since 2015, patrols have covered the area from Pier to Pier. Starting this Friday, in partnership with Resolve Security and Street Safety Marshals, patrols will also cover areas east of the pier to improve safety across the city.
