Jake Finn, a resident of Bexhill, has been sentenced to three months in prison for assaulting a paramedic during a drug-related incident. The emergency services were called to his home on De La Warr Road due to concerns over his welfare linked to drug use.
When paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) arrived at 5:30am on May 3 last year, Finn became aggressive and spat in the face of a paramedic who was trying to assist him. The attack caused outrage among emergency workers and the community.
At Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 27, Finn pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker. The court deemed his actions serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.
The paramedic described the assault as “totally unwarranted,” stating, “I was there to provide a service to help him.”
Chief Inspector Simon Yates of the Rother Neighbourhood Policing Team condemned the attack as “disgraceful,” emphasizing the unacceptable abuse faced by emergency crews on a daily basis. He said, “Abuse should never be part of the job,” and praised the prison sentence handed down.
Dave Monk, SECAmb’s Security Manager, also expressed support for the sentence, saying, “Our crews should never have to endure such disgusting behaviour. We welcome this custodial sentence and will work closely with police to hold offenders accountable.”
Authorities are sending a strong message that assaults on emergency workers will not be tolerated. They urge the public to respect and support those risking their lives to help others in crisis situations.
