Three ambulances erupted in flames outside East Surrey Hospital in Redhill this afternoon, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
Surrey Fire and Rescue were alerted just after 2:15pm today and rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, but reports confirm that part of the hospital building has also caught fire.
Surrey Police are assisting firefighters as they work to contain the fire. The situation is ongoing, with emergency crews focused on bringing the blaze under control.
A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) confirmed that patients are being diverted to nearby hospitals due to the incident. “We are taking patients to neighbouring hospitals, depending on their location and condition, with capacity also guiding decisions,” she said. “This includes Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath and others.”
More updates will follow as the situation develops.
