Kent Fire and Rescue rushed to flats on Canterbury Street after a pan of oil overheated and burst into flames, sparking a flat blaze.
Two fire engines arrived on scene, with teams wearing breathing apparatus tackling the fire using main jets and hose reels. A high-powered fan was used to clear thick smoke from the property.
Firefighters led one man out of the flats who was suffering from suspected smoke inhalation. He was then handed over to SECAmb paramedics for treatment. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
Following the incident, firefighters issued an urgent kitchen safety warning to the public:
“Never leave cooking unattended. Switch off burners and remove pans if you leave the kitchen. Keep working smoke alarms on every floor. Test them weekly for early fire warning. Stay alert to avoid kitchen fires caused by overheating oil or forgotten pans.”
Fire crews reminded everyone that a moment’s carelessness can spark a dangerous blaze, urging people to stay safe and vigilant in their kitchens.
