A man has died after a fire broke out in a first-floor flat on Venner Road, Lewisham, in the early hours of Tuesday, February 18. The blaze started just before 6am, prompting a rapid response from emergency services.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) was alerted at 5:54 AM and dispatched four fire engines from Beckenham, Forest Hill, West Norwood, and Bromley to the scene. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 7:16 AM.

Despite the swift intervention, a man was found inside the flat and treated by London Ambulance Service paramedics before being taken to hospital. Sadly, he later died from his injuries.

LFB confirmed that only a small part of the flat was damaged by the fire. The exact cause remains unknown, and fire officers are working closely with local authorities to investigate the incident.

“Despite the rapid response of our crews and the efforts of London Ambulance Service, this incident has had a tragic outcome,” said an LFB spokesperson. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time.”

No other injuries were reported, but nearby flats were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Lewisham Council and local support services are assisting affected residents.

London Fire Brigade has urged residents to check their smoke alarms, be aware of escape routes, and maintain vigilance regarding fire safety at home. For advice, residents are encouraged to use the London Fire Brigade Home Fire Safety Checker tool.

Authorities have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information about the fire to come forward as the investigation continues.
