London commuters experienced significant disruption today after an e-bike caught fire on a platform at Rayners Lane Underground Station in Harrow.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded promptly at 11:30 AM on Thursday, 27 February, following reports of the blaze. Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames, although smoke spread through parts of the underground network.
The incident led to severe delays and temporary suspensions of services on the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines at Rayners Lane while firefighters worked to control the situation and secure the platform.
A Transport for London (TfL) spokesperson confirmed the disruption and advised passengers to check for updates before travelling.
E-bike and e-scooter battery fires have been increasing across London. The LFB has issued warnings about the dangers posed by faulty or unregulated lithium-ion batteries.
“This incident highlights the serious risk posed by e-bikes, particularly when their batteries malfunction. We urge e-bike owners to use manufacturer-approved chargers and to never leave batteries charging unattended,” said an LFB spokesperson.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with early indications suggesting a battery fault or overheating issue as the likely cause.
