A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent following a major fire that destroyed a property in Catford at dawn on Sunday, 2 March. The blaze broke out on Stansted Road, prompting a rapid response from emergency crews.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) were alerted just before 6am after reports of a fire on Stansted Road. Multiple fire engines and firefighters rushed to the scene to tackle the flames engulfing the lower ground floor of the affected property.

Police officers, paramedics from London Ambulance Service, and Metropolitan Police also attended the incident to assist with the emergency response.

Authorities confirmed that a man has been taken into custody in connection with the fire, though his identity has not been disclosed. The severity of the blaze has led to the closure of Stansted Road in both directions near its junction with Faversham Road, causing significant disruption in the area.

Forensic teams are currently examining the scene to gather evidence as the arson investigation is underway.

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 5.42am on 2 March to reports of a fire on Stansted Road in Catford. We sent ambulance crews, an incident response officer, and our hazardous area response team. We treated a man at the scene before taking him to hospital.” The extent of the injuries sustained is not yet confirmed.
