A huge fire erupted at a derelict cinema site close to Gala Bingo on Richmond Road, Kingston upon Thames, this Sunday afternoon. Thick smoke billowed across the area, causing significant disruption and road closures as fire crews rushed to the scene.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded with an extensive deployment of 25 fire engines and two aerial ladders to combat the blaze. Firefighters equipped with full breathing apparatus used main jets and ladders in an effort to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings. Eyewitnesses reported seeing large plumes of smoke rising into the sky.
Emergency services quickly cordoned off the area and closed several roads to ensure public safety. The LFB confirmed that crews from multiple boroughs, including Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, Twickenham, and Richmond, were involved due to the fire’s scale.
Station Commander Will Thompson stated: “Crews are making steady progress in tackling the fire. There are road closures in place, and we urge people to avoid the area to help reduce disruption. The fire is producing smoke, so we advise local residents to keep their windows and doors closed.” He also noted that two 32-metre turntable ladders are being used as observation towers to give commanders a better vantage point to coordinate firefighting efforts.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The old cinema, which has been abandoned for several years, has been a known hotspot for anti-social behaviour and fire risks. This incident has intensified concerns among local residents who have long called for redevelopment or improved security measures at the site.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the Richmond Road area while emergency crews continue their work. Traffic disruptions are ongoing, and further updates on road conditions and the fire investigation will be provided as the situation develops.
