A popular kebab shop in Beckenham has been served with a prohibition notice by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and forced to close immediately due to significant fire safety failings that endanger lives.
The notice was posted on the window of Kebab Ye, located at 292-294 High Street, Beckenham, BR3 1DY, on May 12, 2025. It was issued against SAS Group Holdings LTD. The shop is now officially closed until urgent fire safety improvements are carried out.
The building contains a commercial unit on the ground floor with residential flats above. Although the kebab shop was not trading when the notice was served, the closure also applies to the flats, effectively prohibiting any sleeping on the premises until the fire hazards are resolved.
The closure was enforced under Article 31 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The order cites fire risks so “serious” that continued occupation of the building is deemed dangerous.
The London Fire Brigade’s prohibition notice highlights several alarming safety issues, including inadequate fire separation between floors, poor or blocked escape routes, absence of fire alarms or warning systems, escape paths cluttered with flammable materials, escape routes passing through high fire risk zones, and the presence of highly combustible substances compromising evacuation.
The notice was authorised by DAC K McKenzie of the London Fire Brigade. The owners have 21 days to appeal the order.
This enforcement acts as a clear warning to businesses and residents to prioritise fire safety, especially in mixed-use buildings. Residents affected by the closure are urged to take the warning seriously, as fire safety compliance is not only sensible but legally required.
