A blazing fire at a terraced house in Dagenham has revealed a hidden cannabis farm, prompting police to launch a search for those responsible.
The fire broke out at around 5:15pm on Sunday, 25 May, at a property on Comyns Road. Four fire engines and 25 firefighters responded quickly, battling flames that caused serious damage to the ground floor and part of the first floor.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) brought the blaze under control by 6:41pm.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters alerted the Metropolitan Police, who seized a number of cannabis plants from the property.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “On Sunday, 25 May at 17:27hrs the Met was alerted by the London Fire Brigade to a fire on Comyns Road, Dagenham. After the fire was contained, officers seized a number of cannabis plants. There were no reports of any injuries. No arrests have been made at this stage.”
Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 and quote CAD 5567/25MAY.
Fire crews from Dagenham, Barking, and Greenwich responded rapidly after multiple 999 calls. The fire was brought under control within 90 minutes.
The LFB reported: “Most of the ground floor and a small part of the first floor were damaged by the fire. There were no injuries reported.”
The official cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The owners of the property have not been traced. Police are appealing to the public for assistance and have not yet determined if the cannabis farm is linked to organised crime.
