Five men have been jailed for their roles in violent disorder that took place in Stoke-on-Trent and surrounding areas. The incidents involved bricks being thrown and police officers being attacked during chaotic scenes.
The sentences handed down are as follows:
- Jarrod Hollinshead, 26, no fixed address – 36 months for affray.
- Andrew Townley, 45, Hanley – 34 months for violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.
- Ashley Morris, 31, Newcastle-under-Lyme – 30 months for violent disorder.
- James Watkins, 35, Stoke-on-Trent – 36 months for violent disorder.
- Lee Grocott, 48, Stoke-on-Trent – 32 months for violent disorder.
Each individual was identified and convicted based on evidence gathered during the disturbances. Jarrod Hollinshead was seen charging at police while wielding a brick and shouting abuse before being arrested at the scene.
Andrew Townley was captured on social media and bodycam footage grabbing a police shield and inciting violence during a disturbance in Hanley.
Ashley Morris threw bricks and other objects at officers and bystanders, repeatedly attempting to break police lines. His actions were recorded on CCTV.
James Watkins challenged members of the public to fights and threatened police officers with a glass bottle. He was identified and arrested several days after the events.
Lee Grocott was filmed throwing missiles and shouting aggressively at officers before his arrest.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Ellison of Staffordshire Police commented on the case, stating, “Those involved in these senseless acts are being identified and sent before the courts. More offenders will face prison as detectives tirelessly review evidence.”
Ellison also indicated that further arrests are expected as the investigation continues. The police force encourages anyone with information to visit the Public Portal at mipp.police.uk to assist in building the case.
This sentencing is part of a wider crackdown on violent disorder in the region. Staffordshire Police have warned that more charges will be brought in the coming days, emphasizing that violent behaviour will not be tolerated in the area.
