Darren Collins, 56, a digital forensic specialist from Stafford, was sentenced to three years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court today for misusing police crime scene photos.
The long-serving police staffer abused his access by downloading more than 3,000 sensitive images between 2014 and 2018. Among these were official police photographs of crime scenes and post-mortem examinations, which are vital pieces of evidence used in criminal trials and coroner’s inquests.
Collins claimed that he accessed the images to enhance his forensic knowledge and advance his career. However, police authorities classified his actions as misconduct in a public office.
Collins had worked for Staffordshire Police for 18 and a half years before his arrest in March 2019. The arrest followed internal investigations triggered by concerns raised by his colleagues. He was suspended immediately and later dismissed without notice for discreditable conduct in March 2021. Following these events, he has been officially banned from policing and related law enforcement roles.
Deputy Chief Constable Emma Barnett condemned Collins’ actions, describing them as a “serious crime.” She said, “Collins pleaded guilty to a serious criminal offence and today’s sentencing reflects that. I’m very sorry for the additional distress that Collins’ actions caused to the families of the victims involved.”
She added, “We expect the highest levels of honesty and integrity from all of our officers and staff and anyone who falls below these standards will be held to account. The force is promoting a safe and ethical culture which makes clear to officers and staff that they are duty bound to challenge and report behaviour that does not align with the Code of Ethics.”
